Fascinating news from Spain’s top division. The Spanish football association RFEF have officially demoted Elche CF, the club from the Province of Alicante, to Liga Adelante, Spain’s second tier football division. The club had achieved a mid-table finish and were a comfortable six points clear of relegation after the final game of this season, concluding the year in 13th place.
However, Elche were much less successful off the pitch and failed to pay a tax bill worth €8 million. The club did not comply with the 29th May deadline and were subsequently banned from playing La Liga football next season. As is often the case, one’s misery is another man’s fortune, and the lucky party in today’s decision is this season’s La Liga newcomer SD Eibar who had just failed to avoid relegation, one year after being promoted from the second division. The Basque club can now look forward to continuing to play top-flight football next season.
