It seems as though, Manchester United’s player of the year 2011 is on his way out of Old Trafford, after his loan spell at boyhood club Sporting has come to an end. Turkish giants Fenerbahce have been heavily linked with the player, whose agent now seems to confirm that talks are well underway and a conclusion near.
The winger and Portugal international had a fairly productive season in his homeland and managed to accumulate 12 goals and eight assists in 37 games for Sporting. During his seven years at Old Trafford, Nani managed to appear in 230 official games in which he scored 40 goals. He had joined Manchester United from Sporting for €25.5 million in 2007, but somewhat failed to live up to the expectations, although some might argue that he had suffered from being compared to compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he shared two seasons at United. An incredibly talented and tricky player, the Old Trafford crowd simply expected too much from Nani at times. Nevertheless, the player will be remembered fondly by some United supporters who witnessed some great performance from the winger such as his man of the match performance in the FA Cup against Arsenal in February 2008.
It is a shame that a player of such talent and at 28 years of age seems set to join one of Europe’s smaller leagues and will not be showcasing his skills in any of the top divisions. On the other hand, Nani might enjoy being away from the limelight of Europe’s top leagues, although the Serie A might have been an ideal destination for the Portuguese.
