Sweden’s U21s have won the European Championship in the Czech Republic, after beating Portugal by 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The teams played out a stalemate and no side was able to break through in 120, with the score locked at 0-0. In the penalty shootout, coveted Sporting midfielder William Carvalho then failed to score from the spot and handed the title to the Swedes.
This is Sweden’s first title in the competition that was won by Spain in 2013 and 2011. Sweden had beaten fellow Scandinavians Denmark by 4-1, whilst Portugal thumped Germany by 5-0 in the semi-finals. This is a great triumph for Sweden and the nation will benefit from the talent that was on display in the Czech Republic during tournaments of the future.
