Hopes were high yet again, but Argentina replicated last year’s trend of losing a major final, when hosts Chile beat the Albicelestes by 4-1 after penalties. The game was a fairly boring affair with neither side able to create anything exciting during the first 120 minutes. In the penalty shoot-out then, it was Argentina’s stars who failed miserably, with Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega missing from the spot.
In contrast, all Chilean spot-kick takers converted from 12 yards and it was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez who sent the country to the top of South America with his converted final penalty. The 2015 Copa America represents Chile’s first major title and sees the national team’s status improve further, after a decent showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Argentina on the other hand, continue the wait for a title since triumphing at the 1993 Copa America. This is particularly frustrating for superstar Lionel Messi who may never win a trophy with his country, despite being considered the greatest footballer of all time by many.
