Casillas Joins Porto

Spectacular news coming out of Madrid. Spanish No. 1 and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas is set to leave the club and the country at around 1pm local time, in order to join his new employers FC Porto of Portugal. Intriguingly, Real have decided to cancel Casillas’ contract that was due to run out in 2017, and have agreed to pay the club legend a compensation in the region of €10 million. This news is almost certain to trigger more speculation surrounding the future of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea who is now highly likely to move back to the Spanish capital.

Casillas is regarded as one of Real Madrid’s biggest club icons and has never played for any other clubs. In 16 years spent at the club as a senior player, the Spanish international has accumulated 725 official appearances, making him the second most successful player, after Raul, in this regard. Casillas had joined Real in 1990 at the age of just nine and is unsurprisingly referred to as San Iker by the Real Madrid faithful.

During his time at Real, Iker Casillas has collected five league titles, three Champions League trophies, two Copa del Reys and more. The supporters will certainly miss the iconic goalkeeper and will have to get used to a different name in goal for the first time in a long time. As things stand, that name will be Madrid-born David de Gea who has been linked with Real for a while now, and who will represent the city and club in the arguably best way. In this sense, Real Madrid fans can look forward to a player who might just as well become another local hero with the potential of becoming a club legend himself.
