Roma’s New Boys Boost Ambitions

Italian club Roma had a very good year and has been one of Serie A’s more stable contenders in the recent past, especially following the fall from grace for the two Milan clubs. Last season’s runner-up and Juve’s top challenger looks set to build on this success, given the arguably successful transfer activity of this summer so far. In this sense, Shots & Goals looked at the newly recruited players and the expectations that should be placed on them.

In goal, the Romans took advantage of Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s unsatisfying situation at Arsenal and agreed a loan for the 25-year old, who will be challenging Morgan De Sanctis for the number one position. The Poland international had not been first-choice in North London for a while and his confidence might suffer from this. Nevertheless, Szczesny moves to the Italian capital with the experience of 48 clean sheets in 132 Premier League appearances; this will certainly be beneficial to the club. Here is a look at some of Szczesny’s best saves.

Roma also recently managed to lure Egypt international Mohamed Salah to the club, also on loan from London, from Chelsea to be exact. Recruiting the winger represents a coup of sorts for the Romans. The 23-year old has impressed on loan at fellow Serie A side Fiorentina, where managed six goals and three assists in 16 appearances, after joining La Viola for the second half of the campaign. Salah is a tricky, technically versatile and quick winger who, above all, adds an intriguing edge to Roma’s attacking play. Some of Salah’s skills set can be viewed here.

With the purchase of Spanish winger Iago Falque, the Romans have also dipped into the local market and have recruited the player from Serie A rivals Genoa. The transfer is classed as a €1 million loan that becomes a permanent deal after Falque’s first official match for Roma, when the club will have to transfer a further €7 million to Genoa. Falque had a great Serie A campaign last season and scored an impressive 13 goals and provided five assists in 32 appearances. The 25-year old has also played Premier League football for Spurs in the past and will add further trickery and determination to Roma’s attacking play. Here is a look at what can be expected from Falque.

Finally, the Giallorossi have also managed to bolster their attacking options with yet another high-profile signing from the Premier League. The Romans are believed to have agreed a fee of just under €20 million with Manchester City regarding the transfer of Bosnia international striker Edin Dzeko. The 29-year old has an impressive 50 Premier League goals and 24 assists to his name, as well as having scored 66 goals in 111 Bundesliga appearances during his time at German side VfL Wolfsburg. Here is a look at some of Dzeko’s Manchester City highlights.

With this recruitment surge, Roma’s ambitions are more than evident. There seems to be genuine belief that the Giallorossi can prevent Juve from claiming a fifth title in a row. In addition to this, the incoming players will have a particularly positive impact on Roma’s ability to score goals and the Rudi Garcia’s team will become less predictable as a result.
