As the transfer window continues to remain open, new players make their way into the Premier League, with the ultimate promise of more success for the buying clubs. The pressure across the division is seemingly high, given that both Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion broke their respective transfer records to get their hands on Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri and Venezuela striker Jose Solomon Rondon respectively. Add to that Southampton’s most recent purchase of former Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu, and the likelihood of a rather tight mid-table battle arguably becomes inevitable. We look at these three players in more detail below.
Xherdan Shaqiri – 23 Years of Age – Stoke City – Fantasy Value: £7 Million
Shaqiri’s transfer from Italian giants Inter to Mark Hughes’ Stoke City side has all the signs of a coup. With Hughes’ continued desire to invest in good footballers, the Potters have managed to pull one out of the bag and grab a young, incredibly talented and sought-after winger. Once one of Europe’s hottest prospects, Shaqiri has somewhat struggled to live up to high expectations since leaving German powerhouse Bayern Munich at the beginning of this year. Nevertheless, the £12 million that Stoke spent on the Swiss international might turn out to be an incredible bargain, if the player realises his potential.
What can be expected from Shaqiri is a mix of both assists and goals. Although not prolific during his time at Inter in Serie A, in Germany, the 23-year old had 19 assists and 17 goals, despite having to come off the bench for the majority of his 81 Bayern Munich appearances. At £7 million, Shaqiri is an arguably cheap midfield alternative with a guarantee of points. Here is a look at Shaqiri’s top five goals in the Bundesliga.
Jose Solomon Rondon – 25 Years of Age – West Bromwich Albion – Fantasy Value: £7 Million
West Brom have also broken a club record, after signing Venezuela international Rondon for £15 million from Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg. The striker is known for being prolific and his record of 28 goals and eight assists in 57 games for Zenit speaks for itself. For those who might be worried about the validity of scoring in the Russian league, Rondon also managed to score 25 goals in 67 La Liga games for Malaga in Spain. The man from Venezuela will certainly do more than just complement the likes of Berahino and Lambert, and might ultimately become part of one of the league’s stronger attacking partnerships.
Also available at £7 million, Rondon is a very good option in attack and should be able to score around 15 goals for the Baggies this season. Here is a look at some of his skills.
Oriol Romeu – 23 Years of Age – Southampton – Fantasy Value: TBC
One of Southampton manager Koeman’s favourite players, the midfielder recently joint the Saints for the rather small fee of £5 million, after finally leaving Chelsea. Having spent time away on loan at German side Stuttgart and Spanish giants Valencia, Romeu still heads to Southampton with the experience of 33 Premier League games and one goal for Chelsea. The Spaniard will probably be a replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin who decided to try his luck at Manchester United earlier this summer. If Southampton’s luck in the transfer market is set to continue, this will be yet another bargain for the Souther English side.
Goals or assists are not really on the menu for those who consider Romeu for their respective team, but what can be expected is a great passer of the ball and a holding midfielder that does not shy away from tough tackles. Here is a look at Romeu’s contributions on the football pitch.
Whereas Shaqiri and Rondon are some exciting additions to the Premier League, Romeu will certainly not steal too much of the limelight. However, any of these players might fill the most appropriate void. Feel free to share your thoughts on these players in the comments section below.
